[20.07.27 World Biz] Facial Asymmetry surgery, if center of the chin is deviated 3mm from the center, the surgery is needed. What is the self-diagnosis of the asymmetry?

Facial asymmetry refers to a state in which the left and right sides of the face are not symmetrical. No one has perfect symmetry on the left and right sides of the face, but if the asymmetry is severe, surgery is necessary.

In general, if the degree of asymmetry is out of the average, asymmetry can be seen at a glance. In general, asymmetry is easily recognized when the jaw end position is more than 3mm deviated from the center. Plastic surgeons view this level as a treatment target.

"The surgery to fix facial asymmetry belongs to functional surgery, not just cosmetic surgery," said Jinsoo Lee, head of the plastic surgery clinic at Faceline. "It can be seen as functional matter not a cosmetic matter"

In fact, if the lips are tilted due to facial asymmetry, it can give a "mocking  impression" even if you stay still. If the facial bones are asymmetrical, it may be difficult to bite or pronounce correctly as they are accompanied by an malocclusion.

In order to determine which surgery to correct facial asymmetry, it is first necessary to accurately identify the cause of the facial asymmetry.

First of all, determine if there is asymmetry in the facial bone. If facial bone asymmetry is not severe, it is mostly caused by soft tissue asymmetry. At this time, surgery is performed to change the shape of the connective tissue, such as liposuction or fat grafting.

If there is a problem with the facial bone, it is largely divided into two situations. One is that there is little asymmetry in bone position, but the size is not symmetrical. In this case, facial contouring surgery to change the size of the facial bone may be considered.

Specifically, cheekbone reduction surgery, jaw reduction surgery, and tip of chin surgery can be cited.

Another case is the asymmetry of the facial bone position. This can be corrected by a double jaw surgery that changes the position of the facial bone.

To find out the exact cause of facial asymmetry, it is best to visit a specialist in the field. However, there is a self-diagnosis method that is very easy to check if there is asymmetry in facial bone position.

"It's not easy to judge asymmetry by looking at your face only in the mirror," Lee said. "Because we see our face every day, it's helpful to implement a self-diagnosis method as we are used to asymmetrical faces."

Self-diagnosis is simple. Bite a ruler longer than 30cm with both molars then look in the mirror or take a selfie.

Doctor Jinsoo Lee advised, "If there is an abnormality in the position of the face bone, the long ruler does not keep level and tilts to one side or if the jaw is tilted in the mirror or selfie, you can think that there is asymmetry in the position of your face bone."

If you don't have a ruler, taking a selfie is also helpful. The trick is to take a selfie with the face in the right posture. By applying the left and right reversal function to the picture taken, it is possible to identify the asymmetry of the face more accurately than when looking at the mirror.

However, this should only be used as a measure of asymmetry, not blind faith. It is important to receive accurate diagnosis and treatment plans from experienced medical professionals in this area. Depending on the diagnosis, the degree of treatment selection and correction can vary widely.

"Facial asymmetry orthodontic surgery should be able to improve both functional and cosmetic aspects," said Doctor Jinsoo Lee. "Since facial asymmetry is especially related to impressions, there are many medical consumers who consider surgery on an important schedule."
